MENTOR EXPECTATION VS. STUDENT PERFORMANCE
It’s important that mentors understand not all students in CIR are superstars. Not all of them are highly motivated. Not all of them are going to respond dramatically and immediately to mentor participation.
But all CIR students have potential. They are in the program because they chose to apply, and they were accepted into the program because someone saw potential in them. Understandably, mentors can become frustrated – at a lack of progress, at a lack of responsiveness, or at wavering motivation. It can be difficult for mentors to justify the effort put in when they aren’t seeing results. We try not to give up on our students and we hope our mentors can stick with their students as well. For some students, it takes a longer time before they finally start applying themselves. For some students, the progress they are making is less visible. We ask mentors to be patient and understanding and to have realistic expectations. But if you are frustrated or concerned, don’t hesitate to contact the CIR Program Director. She can find a way to communicate with the student, she can talk to the student, she may know of something going on in your student’s life that is affecting performance, she can help you come up with a plan of action. |
