YOUR FIRST MEETING WITH YOUR MENTEE(S)
Your students are likely to be quiet and feel intimidated during the first meetings, but try to listen as much as you talk. The students will warm to you as time goes on.
Suggestion for first meeting - Get to Know Each Other: Find Similarities and Celebrate Differences. Begin building your relationship by sharing backgrounds, experiences, interests, and aspirations. Demonstrate a sincere interest in each other by exploring similarities and differences. See this list of good topics for you and your students. Suggestion for second meeting - Establish a Foundation for a Successful Mentoring Relationship. Establish expectations for your relationships and make commitments to each other (for example, how mentors and mentees will communicate, how often the mentor plans to do in-person visits, how often the mentor expects to hear from the mentee, how quickly the mentee will respond to mentor, what each of you hope to gain from the experience). |
